Jamie is 16 years old and lives alone with his mother, Jane. He was born so prematurely that he could fit into the palm of her hand. As well as being blind, he is autistic and has cerebral palsy, but despite his profound disabilities, Jamie has an exceptional talent for music. Music is a major part of Jamie’s life – and it makes him happy. From pop and rock to classical and jazz, Jamie loves all kinds of music. He is able to listen to and remember a piece of music and then play it by ear. He plays with great sensitivity and puts in all the right emotions at the right time. It seems that being blind has given him a perception of things that other people do not hear or feel. |

Jamie’s father left home when he was only 2 weeks old and, although his mother does everything she possibly can for her son, she herself is unwell and cannot return to work. She knows how important music is to Jamie and how much AMBER means to children like him. For Jamie to continue to flourish and perhaps become a professional musician one day, he needs your support to carry on with his piano lessons, and to learn Braille music. Jamie loves to sing and has an amazing voice with great volume, but because of his autism he sometimes gets a little over-enthusiastic and sings too loudly. Singing lessons help to control the loudness of his voice, as well as his singing technique.
Jamie is also fascinated with the technical side of music and likes to compose, arrange and play his own music. Constantly recording on the computer and on DVDs, he loves to put on his own shows for his mother and friends. To become an accomplished musician, he would benefit from being taught professionally how to use Sibelius music software, which is designed to help musicians like Jamie write, play, print and publish musical works of their own. |

Despite their disabilities, Jamie and many other blind and partially sighted children like him have a will to succeed. They often suffer discrimination because of their blindness, which means that they do not get the opportunity to do the things they could do given the chance.
